Flower crowns are a beautiful adornment for a dance around the May Pole- or even a springtime romp around your backyard! Here we have included instructions for creating the base of the crown and two varieties of tissue paper flowers. Of course, fresh flowers can easily be tucked within the crown, as we usually have done for our May Day festival.
Flower Crown Base
For the crown base we have used a few pieces of long raffia and 4-5 lengths of cotton yarn. If raffia is unavailable, all yarn is equally lovely. This video and following pictures demonstrates how to twizzle the lengths of raffia and yarn together and then tie around your child’s head.
Slide the knotted end of the twizzle through the looped end, pull through to adjust size. Use the knotted end to tie in place at the right size.
Folded Tissue Paper Flower
For both types of flowers, you will need tissue paper, scissors, tape, a stapler, and a pipe cleaner.
Layer several pieces of tissue paper. These are about 4.5″x6″ For an accordion fold, begin folding with a thin strip at the top. Turn the stack to the other side (bottom layer up), and fold again. Repeat these two steps, turning your stack to the other side each time you fold, until folded like this. Staple the middle of your folded stack and wrap the end of a half-pipe cleaner around it for the flower’s stem. Open your folds and begin peeling the layers up towards the center staple to “fluff” your flower. Now it is complete and ready to be wrapped around your crown base.
Rolled Tissue Paper Flower
Stack several layers of tissue in long strips. These are about 2.5″x9″ pieces. Tape a half pipe cleaner to one end of the stack. Begin to roll the stack of tissue, holding at the bottom of the stack at the stem. Peel the layers out at the top the roll while pinching them in at the base. Continue rolling, stopping periodically to peel the layers out, and pinch them tighter at the base. As you come to the end, tuck the ends of the tissue into the base and staple them in place. Wrap the stem around the base of your crown to complete it.
